This costume is such an exciting project because we got to create a piece of art.

We created this costume for Julia, a dancer at Clovis Academy of Dance, just minutes away from our office in Clovis, CA. Julia’s mother, Jenny, is not only Julia’s dance teacher and choreographer, but she also works part-time in our office. Jenny fell in love with this custom printed ombre fabric. The costume which was to be used for Julia’s Competition Lyrical Solo was dreamt up by Jenny and perfectly executed by our top-notch seamstresses.

For this piece, Julia and Jenny had a vision in their head that they wanted it to be elegant, flattering to the body, and full of movement. Everything on this costume was custom-made, and we were able to achieve just what they wanted.

The piece was created for the 2020 competition season. Due to the shutdowns, competitions were canceled but when competitions opened back up this past summer, Julia, who absolutely loved this costume, wanted to wear it for the 2021 season. She was 14 when we made the costume and 15 when she could finally wear it, so some alterations were obviously needed. But Julia wasn’t the only one with alterations and redesigns we’ve seen at D.A. Designs, as many of our clients had to put their 2020 season on hold but loved their costumes so much and wanted to wear them for 2021.

Julia is a truly talented dancer, and the choreography for her Lyrical Solo was breathtaking. And, while it was really Julia who shined on the dance floor and brought beauty to the costume, several of the Judges specifically commented on the design and overall effect of the costume, and we couldn’t be prouder.

We are so happy to see all our custom costumes and dancewear back in competitions this year. We look forward to creating something that’s truly unique, never replicated, beautiful, functional, fits, flatters, and lasts.
